About

Find out more about this website - the background to its creation, who is involved, who it's for and how you can provide feedback.

Background

In a region that stretches across 500,000 hectares, only 28% per cent of Auckland’s original native vegetation cover remains. Engaging and supporting Aucklanders in conservation is critical if we want our region's nature and people to thrive.

Many Aucklanders are involved in actively protecting and restoring nature in our largest city.  Feedback from community conservation groups highlighted the need for easier access to digital tools, resources, data and services, to better enable and empower community’s work.

When and how

Launched in August 2020, Tiaki Tāmaki Makaurau | Conservation Auckland is supported by the Environmental Services department who work in partnership with mana whenua and closely with internal and external stakeholders and Aucklanders, towards a healthy, flourishing, sustainable environment.

The website is supported by the Natural Environment Targeted Rate contribution from the rate payers of the Auckland Region.

When we all work together we can expand conservation across Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland to ensure both our region’s natural environment thrives, along with everyone that call this place home.

In partnership with mana whenua

As local government, Auckland Council has Te Tiriti o Waitangi and legislative responsibilities to Māori.

The website is a partnership project with mana whenua:

  • contributing to Auckland Council's commitment to deliver Māori aspirations
  • to help nurture the growing understanding and respect for our Te Tiriti o Waitangi partners, shown by those involved in conservation efforts across the region
  • supporting them, council and community to work alongside each other, towards a thriving environment.
