Guide to responsible pet ownership messaging
Help protect our biodiversity by encouraging responsible cat ownership in your neighbourhood.
Getting started
Pet owners consider their pets to be a member of the family, so make sure your messaging prioritises pet welfare as well as what is good for wildlife
Tap to navigate steps
1. Decide what behaviour(s) to promote
Key pet ownership behaviours that will keep wildlife AND pets safe; desex to prevent overpopulation, microchip and register pets, or provide other means of identification (e.g. collar) to be returned home if lost, keep cats inside at night and on your property as much possible, play with your cat to keep it happy and reduce hunting instinct, use a bell plus a bird-safe collar so birds can see your cat coming, and feed a high meat diet if allowing your cat outside to reduce its urge to hunt.
