Why we created this website

In a region that stretches across 500,000 hectares, only 28% per cent of Auckland’s original native vegetation cover remains. Engaging and supporting Aucklanders in conservation is critical if we want our region's nature and people to thrive.

Many Aucklanders are involved in actively protecting and restoring nature in our largest city.  Feedback from community conservation groups highlighted the need for easier access to digital tools, resources, data and services, to better enable and empower community’s work.

When and how it happened

Tiaki Tāmaki Makaurau | Conservation Auckland was launched in August 2020 and is supported by the Environmental Services department. We work in partnership with mana whenua and closely with internal and external stakeholders and Aucklanders, towards a healthy, flourishing, sustainable environment.

The website is supported by the Natural Environment Targeted Rate contribution from the rate payers of the Auckland Region.

When we all work together we can expand conservation across Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland. This will ensure both our region’s natural environment thrives, along with everyone that calls this place home.

Our partnership with mana whenua

The website is a partnership project between Auckland Council and mana whenua:

  • contributing to Auckland Council's commitment to deliver Māori aspirations
  • to help nurture the growing understanding and respect for our Te Tiriti o Waitangi partners, shown by those involved in conservation efforts across the region
  • supporting everyone to work alongside each other, towards a thriving environment.

Our collaborators

Tiaki Tāmaki Makaurau | Conservation Auckland is a website that pulls together conservation knowledge into one central digital portal. We acknowledge our collaborators (whose logos appear in the footer of the site) for the knowledge they provide on their own websites, that we link users to.

Who this website is for

This website aims to support a broad audience: mana whenua, mataawaka*, landowners, residents, community conservation groups, volunteers, students, school teachers and businesses.

*mataawaka are Māori who live in Auckland and are not in a mana whenua group.
